A art group is celebrating fifty “glorious” years of painting and exhibitions.

The Burnham Art Club began in the mid 1950s when a small group of friends, including Phyllis Pitcher, Shirley Bird and Joan Winder, would paint together at home, before holding their first exhibition in 1964.

The club, which focuses on painting and has about 35 members, has met at various venues over the years, including the Burnham Sailing Club and is currently held at the King’s Hall, in Burnham.

Chairman Sue Spiers, 55, of Maldon Road, Bradwell, joined the group in 1985.

She said: “It’s a release from being at home or at work and it’s just about painting and forgetting about everything else.

“It’s a nice, relaxed and friendly group.”

The group meets between 10am and 2pm every Tuesday.

Anyone interested in joining should call Mrs Spiers on 01621 776570 for more information.
