Shopkeeper turns crimebuster after setting up Stolen In Maldon campaign

Crimebuster: Alan Hilton

A Maldon shopkeeper is waging a war against thieves after setting up a Stolen In Maldon page to “help catch the scum bags”.

As the Facebook page grows in popularity, thieves have continued to steal as many as 15 cars from the Maldon, Heybridge, Burnham, Mayland and Southminster areas in a matter of weeks.

Alan Hilton, 61, hopes that if people put appeals online as quickly as possible it will “keep the area safer and help catch the scum bag who did it”.

Nearly 100 people have liked his page, which means they can see regular updates on the latest stolen items when they log on.

An excellent idea Mr. Hilton.

I thought that we paid some form of Council Tax to Essex Police to do this sort of job? But clearly they're beyond useless as ever in dealing with this sort of crime.

All they'll ever give you is a crime number and let the insurance companies sort it out, they won't even bother to send somebody round.
