The first Burnham market received a warm welcome following initial mixed reactions.

The market was the first to be held in the High Street for at least 16 years.

While Maldon District Council and market organiser Joe Villar hoped it will increase footfall and trade to the town, some residents and traders voiced their concerns that the market would take trade away from local businesses.

But since the first market was held last Tuesday, with stalls such as a greengrocer, fashion stall and fishmongers, shoppers have rallied round to support the new venture, praising the quality of the goods and variety of the stalls.

Louise Berryman, of Southminster Road, Mayland, said: “What a pleasure it was to walk along the market stalls. Can't wait to return again next week.”

Susan Way, of Mill Close, Tillingham added: “There was a lovely friendly atmosphere.. I will definitely be going again.

“This is a tremendous asset to Burnham and I am sure that it will attract people to the town.”

Mr Villar said he was really pleased with how the first market went, despite the initial criticism.

He said: "There was always going to be negative response about something new.

“But I’m really pleased with the way it went and I am thankful for everyone supporting it."
