Schools could receive less money to help children from low income households when the system for free school meals changes.

The pupil premium, a government grant allocated to schools with pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, is designed to raise their attainment and close any gap with their classmates.

It is automatically allocated according to how many receive free school meals.

However from September, all Year One and Two pupils will be given a free meal, regardless of family income.

It will mean parents will have to apply independently for the pupil premium.
