World class artworks could boost the district's tourist economy, say consultants.

Maldon District Council appointed Ingham Pinnock Associates in January to look into ways of regenerating the Dengie Peninsula.

The firm's suggestions include a “world class art installation” on Wallasea that can be seen from Burnham, and another piece of art in Burnham providing information about the artwork on Wallasea and details on how to get to the island.

It said a competition to choose the design could attract international artists and architects such as Antony Gormley, creator of the Angel of the North, and Thomas Heatherwick, who made the Olympic Cauldron for the Olympic flame at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
