A section of historic quayside which collapsed has caused disruption and cancellations to summer events in Maldon.

Council officials have been forced to fence off part of the Hythe Quay and close it to traffic since November after the top surface of one section subsided and the concrete piled and retaining sections holding back the earth moved.

Thames sailing barges have been banned from the affected area, which is about the length of a barge.

Organisers of events which use that part of the quay said the disruption has made things “awkward”.

Gerry Courtney, organiser of the successful Maldon Town Regatta, which typically draws in thousands of visitors each year, feared the event would suffer.
