A grandfather has chronicled the lives of every Burnham man who served and died in the First World War.

Walter Jenkins, who lives in Chapel Road, Burnham with his wife Ruth, was shocked to discover in 2012 that the war memorials in the town only portray the initials and surnames of the 98 men, and nothing more.

Since then, the 64-year-old has made it his goal to find out more about each and every name to include in a new book, entitled ‘Our Dear and Brave Men - the Fallen of Burnham-on-Crouch 1914-1921’.

The treasurer of Burnham’s RNLI said: “The idea started when my wife and I went on a battlefield tour in August 2012."
