Don't mess about - pick it up, says child

The handmade sign seen in Southminster

The handmade sign seen in Southminster

First published in News by , Reporter

A child has been commended for efforts to stop dog mess littering a village’s streets.

The handmade sign was put up this week on the corner of Southfield Way and Lavender Drive in Southminster.

It said: “I know to pick up my dog’s poo and I’m eight.

“Use this bag to pick up your dog’s poo, with compliments. Thank you.”

Ron Pratt, vice-chairman of Southminster Parish Council, said: “It’s brilliant that someone of eight years old has took it upon themselves to do something like this.

“It’s very community spirited.

“It’s a shame that those that don’t pick up are not as community spirited.”

Can I just say sometimes you don't pick it up because you run out of bags - yes, you start off with more than enough bags for the normal walk but the dog manages to get a funny tummy on the walk and you just run out. (Happened to me.) I can also see when you pick up one lot somehow one incompetently loses the other bags (they can fall out of a pocket when distracted.)

Please don't assume all dog leftovers are done with evil intent.

I might add - in the interest of fairness - cats wander around with complete freedom leaving their faeces all over the place but we ignore that. As well, most of the cats are out without bells so their owners are complicit with murder - because that is what the cat is doing....

Have to agree with Jack222 on his point about cats. Cats use my garden as a giant litter box. Cat mess is highly toxic - yet no one is complaining about them!

There is no excuse for not clearing up after your dog, I managed to clear up after my dog until the last time I walked him the night before I gave birth.

As for the comment bts Cllr Pratt re the street cleaning machine, the residents of Southminster have not seen it being used to clean up dog mess, and judging by the state of the pavements it has not been used!

Dogs with a 'funny tummy' do not leave huge, solid poos like the one by this child's sign and by the looks of most of the other dog poos left littering Southminster a 'funny tummy' is not responsible but an irresponsible dog walker!
I accept occasionally you may miscalculate the number of poo bags required on a walk but the socialable thing to do would be to walk your dog the same way the following day and pick it up then...........just a thought.
