A rejuvinated pub has been named most improved pub of the year – less than a year after a couple took it over.
John Walpole, 56, and partner Julia Wingfield, 47, have completely transformed The Carpenters Arms, in Gate Street, Maldon, since taking over at the end of May last year.
Among the changes have been a renewed interest in serving real ales and traditional ciders.
The couple also hope to produce a revised lunchtime menu.
The pub was named the most improved pub out of all in the district by the Maldon and Dengie branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) at the Maldon Beer Festival last week.
Mr Walpole, who was also given the same award in 2012 for improving The Royal Oak, in Fambridge Road, Hazeleigh, said: “There was a lot of stiff competition and we are thrilled to get the award."
