The Thomas Plume Library building could be undergoing a thorough upgrade in the not so distant future.
Maldon Town Council members received a report in January regarding the possibility of a major project to improve and enhance the Plume Building.
James Bettley, 55, chairman of the Thomas Plume Library Trust, said: “At the moment the building is a bit tired and needs a thorough overhaul and upgrade.”
He said: “The library is unique because it was left to the town when Thomas Plume died and has been unchanged since then.
“Not everyone is going to want to look at the books, but we should appreciate it for the very rare thing it is and be proud.”
The Trust has made an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to finance the building.
