Bishop Stephen to join House of Lords

Maldon and Burnham Standard: Bishop Stephen to join House of Lords Bishop Stephen to join House of Lords

Essex's most senior clergyman will take a seat in the House of Lords later this month.

Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford, will become a Lord Spiritual in the chamber.

He will be summoned to Parliament on March 25 and introduced to the house by two fellow bishops.

Mr Cottrell said: “It is a great honour to be joining the House of Lords.

“We bishops do not sit there representing any party, nor even for that matter, the Church of England.

“Our presence in the House of Lords is part of the ancient fabric of the government of this land.

“We stand for faith and for its place in public life; and we speak for our dioceses knowing that the Church of England is so well networked into local communities that we often have insights about the impact of government policies on the ground that few other individuals or institutions can match.

“So I hope that my work in the House of Lords will be as one with my work in the diocese, as a voice for the Christian faith, serving the people of East London and Essex.”

The Lords Spiritual in the House of Lords consist of 26 Church of England bishops.

As well as playing an active role in House of Lords business, the Lords Spiritual read prayers at the start of each daily meeting.

Mr Cottrell, who was born in Leigh-on-Sea, has been Bishop of Chelmsford since 2010.

A relic of bygone years. The CofE should have no say in the government of this country as it is of little or no significance to the vast majority of the population.

I totally agree with the above comments. It's is wrong that an unelected person gets appointed to make laws by which I live. I would certainly not vote for a person who believes in fairies to b represent me in Parliament. It would be nice to live in a fully democratic country, rather than a partial democracy...

This deluded moron is either ill-prepared for his new position or, rather very well prepared for it. The House of Lords has a Church of England role, in that Church Measures must be tabled within the House by the Lords Spiritual. Therefore this fruitcake in a frock either is willfully ignorant or already a past master of politics in that he lies fluently. I believe it is the latter.

He stated: “We bishops do not sit there representing any party, nor even for that matter, the Church of England."

Er ... Excuse me?

Seems like they are atheists - yes.

Morons - no.

Irrespective of whether or noy you believe in any religion, it should be removed from politics and law making.

Most of the waers throughout history have been fought in the name of one god or other, or even different interpretations of the same god (all denominations of Christianity, Islam and Judaism are derived from the same roots). For me, this is a reason why they should not be followed.
