Firefighters are working to stabilise the front of a house after a car reversed into it.

The driver, a woman believed to be aged in her 70s, was driving the Skoda Fabia when it crashed into the end of terrace house in Long Common, Heybridge, at about 11.45am today.

Three fire engines and the urban search and rescue team were called to the scene.

Mark Turnbull, assistant divisional officer at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The car appears to have reversed into the house causing a lot of damage.

"One woman, who was driving the car, has been injured in this incident.

"Crews freed her from the car and she is now in the care of the ambulance service.

"The urban search and rescue team are working with the county surveyor to assess what needs to be done to make the front of the house safe."

The ambulance service said a woman in her 70s suffered a minor shoulder injury and was taken to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, for further treatment.

I know drivers of any age cause accidents and can be dangerous by chosing to drive recklessly, but a lot of old drivers are incapable of driving safely due to age related sight, reaction time, concentration, decision making, restricted movement issues etc.
Compulsory retests every 5 years for the over 60's should be introduced to try and screen these old aged dangers and eliminate accidents such as this.

Hope that the woman recovers OK and the family are able to move back home soon.

Unfortunately there are too many elderly drivers in the district that really shouldn't be on the road. Followed a silver 05 plate Citroen along the Causeway and into Heybridge yesterday afternoon which was poodling along at 15mph oblivious to the half mile tailback behind them. Similarly saw an elderly gent in a Focus who decided that the Tesco roundabout should be driven around 'Lewis Hamilton' style without the need to turn the steering wheel, but cutting up the car on his inside.

Where are the Police? Not out looking for purse snatchers!
