A former Maldon pub will be transformed into a Tesco Express by autumn, it has been confirmed.

Despite fierce opposition from nearby residents, the supermarket giant will start converting The Cups pub, in Wantz Road, into a mini store next month.

Tesco’s plans to change the pub into a new 260-square-metre convenience store was allowed on appeal by the Planning Inspectorate in January, despite Maldon District Council refusing the plans.

The plans include the demolition of the bakery next door to build a single-storey building, as well as renovations to the pub premises.

It was also proposed to create a goods entrance and service yard shared with a property on Wantz Road.
