Detectives have launched an investigation into material found within the former home of a Burnham man.

Seventy-year-old teacher Christopher Dobson, who lived in Chapel Road, died in December 2012.

He was unmarried and had no children.

Police officers searched his former home and discovered material relating to sexual offences against children.

Detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate launched an investigation in August last year, which is still ongoing.

The team are currently conducting enquiries to identify victims of Mr Dobson's offending.

At this stage of the investigation there is no evidence to suggest that any other offenders were involved.

Police are engaging with partner agencies including the Chair of the Essex Children’s Safeguarding Board, Safeguarding and Child Protection Services and the Department for Education and Lifelong Learning.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hall, who is leading the investigation, said: "It is my belief that Christopher Dobson committed serious criminal offences against children over a period of years.

"Despite his death my investigation seeks to establish the full extent of the offending that took place and to engage with those who may have information.

"I would seek to reassure anyone who wishes to speak with my team that their information will be treated with the utmost sensitivity and in confidence.

"My primary concern is to support to those who have been affected.

"I am working closely with partner agencies and other organisations that are able to provide such support.

"Prior to his death Christopher Dobson was well known and I acknowledge that there will be concerns within the local community.

"Under legislation those who have been the victims of these crimes must not be identified and I would strongly caution against any use of social media to comment or speculate.”
