A former refuse site in Maldon could be changed into a country park.

Developers hoping to build houses off Park Drive have suggested that Maldon District Council could take on the responsibility for the public access of the former refuse site.

It has been suggested that the site, which is situated behind the Maldon and Tiptree football ground and next to Millenium Wood, could become an extension to Promenade Park.

Currently the area cannot be accessed by residents and is used by grazing cattle.

A report to the community services committee stated: “This land has been discussed with the council in the past and it was considered then as an opportunity to extend the offer that Promenade Park made to visitors.

“An extension to the more important parts of the park, allowing access for quiet recreation in a ‘country park’ setting is seen as important to relieve some of the pressure that Promenade Park experiences during peak periods."
