Sainsbury's says no to Burnham but a maybe to Maldon

Maldon and Burnham Standard: Sainsbury's said the Burnham locations were not viable Sainsbury's said the Burnham locations were not viable

Supermarkets have snubbed Burnham, despite previously looking for new sites in the town.

Quay Estates had identified three possible locations in 2012 after retailers saw a gap in the market for a new superstore.

It was understood one of the 'big four' - Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda - were interested and it was hoped a new store would bring 300 jobs and a petrol station.

Last April, Sainsbury's - which has no stores in the district - said its interest in the town was at a very early stage.

But a spokesman said the location was not viable, although the company is interested in Maldon.

Asda also had not current plans for Burnham. Morrisons and Tesco had yet to respond.

Anything to stop nasty Tesco having a virtual stranglehold on food retailing in Maldon must be a good thing
