fA mighty oak that had been a fixture on Maldon High Street for at least 100 years has been felled.
Maldon Town Council decided to remove the holm oak from St Peter's Churchyard because a fungal infection meant it was at risk of falling at any moment.
The work was completed over the weekend and yesterday.
A commemorative plaque will be carved from the uninfected wood and a new native tree will be planted.
