A pensioner scammed into handing over £7,000 he had saved for a decade is warning others to remain vigilant.
The 76-year-old man from Great Totham, who did not want to be named, handed over the amount in cash to a fraudster who had said his chimney was in danger of collapsing.
The con artist knocked on his door with a group of men holding brushes and claimed to have repaired his roof the previous year.
He climbed onto the roof, showed the victim a piece of rotting wood and offered to fix the damage.
The pensioner said: “He was ever so quick and convincing.
“It frightened the life out of me, I was worried about myself in the winter."
