An established Christmas exhibition dedicated to showcasing the nautical themed work of local artists is now open.

Salty Dogs Christmas Show, which has now been running on an annual basis for more than 20 years, will be on display at 11 Market Hill, in Maldon, until December 31.

Initially, the show was used to promote the calendars of organiser Den Phillips, of Carmelite Way, Maldon.

She is a well-known maritime photographer who has travelled the length and breadth of Europe and the Caribbean to cover classic yachting events.

Her annual east coast calendar features a variety of photography of a nautical nature, including traditional boats, seascapes and people involved on and around the waterfront.

As the show has evolved over the years, the work of more local artists have been included and it now boasts a diverse range of works.

This year’s collection includes paintings by Sue Spiers, pottery by Pru Green, driftwood art by Vanessa Lewis, jewellery by Drift and Leonie Marks, and stained glass by Ian Hughes.

There is also a collection of handcrafted bags fashioned from sailcloth, ropework in many forms, including door stops, and key rings.

Den, meanwhile, will be exhibiting prints, greetings cards and presenting her black and white 2014 East Coast and 2014 Classic Yacht calendars.

The shop is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays throughout December.
