Work has begun on the new state-of-the-art Ormiston Rivers Academy.
Builders have arrived on the site in Southminster Road to create the multi-million pound school, which is expected to be completed in 15 months.
The school will undergo a complete refurbishment, which will include a new performing arts block, a new learning resource centre and broadband.
Principal Joan Costello decided to have a piece of the action this week and was pictured sitting in one of the diggers.
She said: “We are looking forward to have a brand new school.
“At one point we were thinking of a new build but it would be more worth our money to have a refurbishment."
