Maldon: Brain damaged teen will be home for his 18th
A teenager who was left severely brain damaged after falling from play equipment will return home for the first time since his accident to celebrate his 18th birthday.
Popular Plume School sixth former Sam Richards almost died and was put in an induced coma after he fractured his skull at the Oak Tree Meadow play area in Heybridge a year ago.
At the time his family were told he was unlikely to pull through and medics described his head injury as one of the worst they had seen.
But now Sam has defied all odds to return to Maldon almost a year after his accident last September 28 to celebrate the birthday he never thought he would see with family and friends.
He is expected to visit his schoolfriends at Plume Sixth Form, before going to his home in Mundon Road, Maldon for a small get-together.
