Maldon: Pensioner's warning over scams
1:00pm Monday 30th September 2013 in News
A pensioner is urging people to be wary of scams after receiving letters “all the time” claiming he could win prizes or money.
Peter Healey, of Tiptree, has been plagued by scam letters, the most recent being a few weeks ago when he received a letter from Japan claiming he had won a £92,000 Mercedes.
In February, he was almost the victim of a conman who claimed to be from BBC’s Heir Hunters and tried to convince him he had inherited £10million but needed to pay £200,000 to release it.
Essex Police is currently warning people to be wary of scams involving conmen pretending to be police or bank staff and attempting to steal money from their victims.
They said 270 people have been targeted across Essex since January.
Peter said: “My advice to people is use your head. If you haven’t entered a competition, how can you win a prize?
“They always want money from you. That should get you suspicious.”
