Maldon: Man dressed as the Joker admits to crime spree
A man dressed as The Joker from Batman stole bottles of wine from Marks and Spencer.
Four days before the theft, Damien Louca chased parking warden Stuart Barwell into Costcutter in Maldon after he ticketed him.
He admitted assaulting Mr Barwell on June 17, stealing three bottles of wine from Marks and Spencer in Maldon High Street on June 21, and damaging a fire alarm in the town’s McDonalds on the same day.
Louca, of Heywood Way, Heybridge, had his face painted white and wore bright red lipstick, black trousers and a black jacket when he went into Marks and Spencer, Chelmsford Magistrates Court heard on Friday.
Kathy Wilson, prosecuting, said: “He took items from the display and put the items in the basket.
“A lady was working at the till and the defendant said to her ‘I am going to say one thing to you’ and she replied ‘oh yeah what’s that?’ “He said ‘I am the new joker’."
Later that day he bought a cheeseburger at McDonalds wearing the same make-up before smashing the fire alarm on his way out.
He was arrested at 8.10pm in the High Street.
Jenny Bradbury, mitigating, said Louca had suffered a breakdown after his partner took his son away.
She said: “I believe alcohol would have been an exacerbating factor in these offences and it is something Louca needs help with.”
He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, which included a year’s supervision, to attend a rehabilitation centre for 15 days and to complete 12 days of an alcohol intervention programme.
He must also pay £24.78 to Marks and Spencer and £5 to McDonalds.
On Twitter, a day after the incident at Marks and Spencer, Louca tweeted: “What the hell happened on Friday? Maldon town I love you all and I’m sorry.”
