Maldon: Councillor wins four-year benefit fraud battle
A councillor and former mayor accused of benefit fraud has won a four-year legal fight against the Department for Work and Pensions.
Maldon town and district councillor Stephen Savage, 62, who was the town’s mayor in 2011/12, was alleged to have been overpaid more than £5,000 in jobseeker’s allowance between May 2007 and March 2009.
In 2009 the department’s fraud investigators interviewed Mr Savage about the payments he received as a councillor and his entitlement to benefits.
Mr Savage appealed against the decisions, claiming that he was not employed by the council and therefore entitled to benefits, but was overruled in a first-tier tribunal in November 2011, when a judge stated that the overpayment decisions were correctly made.
