Maldon: First aider describes teenager's rescue after she was impaled on a nail
9:00am Thursday 15th August 2013 in News
A teenage girl was rescued after impaling her leg on a large nail while cleaning a barge.
The 14-year-old was helping friends clean the vessel at Hythe Quay, Maldon, yesterday when she knelt on the spike.
Ralph Springett, a shipwright and first aider, said: “I didn’t want to move her with it sticking out of her leg.
“We put a pad around it to stop it moving around.
“We then called the emergency services and they called everyone else when they got here.”
An RAF Sea King rescue helicopter, three fire engines and the ambulance service were called to help the teenager.
Witnesses said it was about an hour-and-a-half before the youngster was freed and taken to hospital.
