Burnham: 'Leave us as a village' - Mayland residents' message to developer
An angry group of residents have vowed to fight to preserve their villages after a developer expressed an interest in building houses and leisure facilities.
Villagers in Mayland and Maylandsea want developers to stay away, amid fears that infrastructure could not cope with extra houses.
A survey gauging ideas about the future of the villages was hand-delivered to residents at the beginning of the month by Hedgehog Development, based in Southend.
The survey, entitled Mayland Park, asked if they would prefer retirement homes, affordable homes, social housing or apartments.
It also offered options including shops, a community centre, gym, park and an infants school - but specified that leisure facilities may be built on agricultural land or protected land, due to a shortage of places to build on.
