A self-proclaimed “universal warrior” for local people has received his MBE from Buckingham Palace.

Brian Beale, 71, of Devonshire Road, Southminster, rubbed shoulders with Olympic gold medallists when he received the award from Prince Charles on Wednesday.

He was given the New Year’s honour in recognition for his services to local government.

He is an independent district councillor, leader of the opposition, sits on eight district council committees and is also parish council chairman.

Mr Beale, who wore a morning suit for the event, received the award in the Palace’s ballroom, alongside super heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua.

He said: “There was lots of people, it was a really lovely occasion.

“Everyone thought the Queen was going to be there but it was Prince Charles."
