Maldon district: Extra homes could total 5,000 Maldon district: Extra homes could total 5,000

A councillor is warning the district’s residents not to be complacent, amid fears that thousands of extra homes could be built.

District councillor and Southminster parish councillor, Brian Beale, believes that the 3,000 new homes planned for the district between 2014 and 2029 could increase by more than 60 per cent to 5,000.

Maldon District Council, keen to reduce the need for large-scale infrastructure changes, is planning to deliver only half the new housing the Government has recommended in an attempt to safeguard the district’s countryside.

The 3,000 homes planned is significantly less than the 5,955 identified as necessary to meet the needs of an increasing population.

Mr Beale is warning residents to not assume the already controversial 3,000 homes is “a done deal”.

He said: “There are no official figures but the councils in the whole of the country are going to have this shock treatment."
