Burnham: Tribute to be created for Great War dead

A Burnham resident is appealing for help in piecing together the background of fallen soldiers of the First World War.

Walter Jenkins, 63, is researching the stories behind the names on two memorials in Burnham.

One is on the Quay and the other is in St Mary’s Parish Church.

Both memorials have identical lists of 98 names with no other information.

Civil servant Mr Jenkins said: “Next year will be the centenary of the commencement of this conflict and, as no other information is recorded, it is felt that an appropriate tribute to these men would be to have available more details of their family background, where they served, died and are buried.”

If you can help with his project, contact Mr Jenkins at 67 Chapel Road, Burnham-on-Crouch CM0 8JD, or email walterjenkins@intamail.com
