A Burnham pensioner has paid tribute to his “good friend” and actor Richard Briers, who died on Sunday.

The star, best know for his role in TV’s The Good Wife, had been battling a serious lung condition for several years and died in his London home.

Alex Jennings, 82, of Fernlea Road, counts Mr Briers as his friend after first speaking to him on the phone more than seven years ago.

Mr Jennings, who last spoke to Mr Briers a week before his death, has never met the actor but has spoken to him frequently over the years.

He described the actor’s death as “shocking” and as if a member of his own family had died.

He said: “I felt sick when I heard he had died, it was as if someone had punched me in the stomach."
