Maldon: Traders experience disappointing year in 2012 Maldon: Traders experience disappointing year in 2012

Maldon’s traders have revealed business has been varied in the run-up to Christmas, with 2012 being difficult overall.

At outdoor clothing store, At Your Leisure, in the High Street, owner John Whenman, 51, admitted trading had been hard this year until the Christmas trade took off.

He said: “December has been good, but there’s not a big difference between this year and the year before.

“The rest of the year has been fairly poor. Compared to previous years we are down.

“December is the only month we noticed it was the same as before.

“We normally do fairly well when there is the Regatta.”

Owner of The Emporium in High Street, Graham Powell, also said he had a difficult year, with figures showing the shop is five per cent down on the year before.

He said: “There’s no question about it, it’s not easy on the High Street.

“I think we are all generally finding it very tough."

I have little sympathy for some traders in Maldon, twas the Saturday before Christmas, I'm running a gift shop...."oh I'll open at 10am"

4 shops I wont bother with again, and from what I saw there were 3 other dads taking their kids around town early to get mums xmas present who won't be bothering too.

Salty Dogs, The one in the old Maldon book shop next to old library, the photo and picture shop next to Coe's, and the one near Wheelers chip shop....bye bye

A car parking fee 'holiday' would've helped the traders. .

Parking *was* free on the Saturday I visited

AAV is right, there was free parking on the 3 Saturdays leading up to Christmas. A bit of publicity about this would have been useful, saw scant all about it in the High St.

Also noticed quite a few small retail shops were completely CLOSED on Sunday December 23rd.
