A Burnham pensioner is calling for some of the town council’s £25k precept to be used on the restoration of an historic town artefact.

Alex Jennings, 81, of Fernlea Road, suggested the extra money should be used to put the iron cannon, situated in the corner in front of the Ye Olde White Harte Hotel in The Quay, in a more prominent position.

He said: “The cannon is iconic to Burnham, as I recall it over forty years ago cemented into the sea wall overlooking the river.

“If indeed it does belong to the town, then why cannot it be ensconced in a more prominent and safer position by being cemented into a plinth on the other side of the WWII mine?

“At the moment it’s in a delapidated state, it’s disgraceful in my opinion."
