An alarmingly high number of drivers have been speeding in a Burnham road, according to recent checks.

A community speed watch, organised by Essex Police, reported 52 per cent of 300 vehicles were exceeding the speed limit in Maldon Road.

Thirty-two per cent of them were going over 33 miles per hour on the main road into Burnham, which has a 30mph speed limit.

The highest recorded speed was 52 mph.

Town mayor Helen Elliott said: “I wish people didn’t speed. When I drive on the road, I often get people overtaking me."
