Cadet ship delayed but land based headquarters likely

CADETS in Maldon could soon have a headquarters after months of searching.

But an offshore ship, which was the prefered option, will have to wait a bit longer.

The Maldon and District Cadet Sea Corps need a headquarters to keep going and grow for the future.

And a on-land site in Promenade Park, Maldon, has now been earmarked as the most likely location.

Barbara Keable, who works with the cadets, said: "We need a headquarters for training and storage with showers and toilets and it would need to be land based for now.

"We had proposed a ship about a year ago and the cadets wanted it. Brian Mead chairman of Maldon District Council helped us to look at ships but a ship would be too expensive for us to maintain in the long term.

"And we could not progress without support and needed something now.

"We have been given a year to establish ourselves so the headquarters has to be land based and we could have found a plot in Promenade Park.

"We are looking at becoming a centre for excellence and a ship in the longer term would clinch it."

Maldon District Council confirmed they are in discussions with the group about a possible site in Promenade Park.

Richard Holmes, head of leisure and liveability, said: "We are working with them to try and provide a site and we will do what we can."

Chairman Brian Mead said: "We are still looking for a ship for all the youth of Maldon. It would offer a place to meet and be taught navigation, sailing, engineering, electronics and more.

"The financial situation has put it on hold and money would have to come from industry and business.

"It is something I agreed to do for them.

"The cadets are now looking at land but we still want to find a ship if we can get one big enough."

It is thought that any ship would be most likely moored at Canada Dock near the Brythnoth statue.

How depressing that a wonderful park will become base for the armed services. Given the current illegal and immoral wars in which we are active it would be much better if this 'grab the thick children why they are young' and put them in the armed services was placed in the local recycling yard. Let my taxes not be used in this horrible waste.

You know, Jack makes me realise I’m not that bad after all, I thought I was a grumpy old git who had a jaundiced attitude to all around me, but no, there seems to be someone more “anti-everything” than me.

I personally thought that youngsters who can be bothered to get away from the Playstation and go to venture scouts, sea scouts or air cadets are not usually the ones who are hanging around your back alley, ripping plants from your borders and keying your car. But then Jack knows different, apparently they are the ones re-enacting war games in his precious park, bayoneting Britnorth and generally pillaging the prom.

I ask myself, who are the kids in uniforms who help out at local fetes and country fairs? Who are the kids in the uniforms who turn out for remembrance Sunday?

Get a grip Jack, these kids are giving something back, bettering themselves and I’d pontificate that these are the good kids, I remember when I was at school the “nice kids” were in the scouts etc, the nasty kids were the ones taking the mikey out of their uniforms and sniggering at them because they were different (and no I wasn’t in the scouts, I got kicked out of cubs at an early age for a baked bean related incident)

Maybe if a few more of the “yobbos” were in the scouts they may learn a little more respect for their elders and betters and not pick Jack up on his appalling rants?

Anyway, don’t worry scouts, it’s not you who are the “thick children” The thick children can’t see two sides of the argument.

Peace and love.

very well put and said, between Jack and the self proclaimed president of his back garden, they would put an end to all hard workers and decent people in the area, Maldon would have no entertainment structure for the young,a power station in the high street,3 post offices, and all dogs would be put down. How the Maldon and burnham must love the usefull comments that are often left on here by the Dengie two who apear to hate the people and the area that they live in :)
