Caravans set to be cleared out
BURNHAM'S caravan park is set to be turned into a virtual ghost town following a rent dispute.
Steve Watson, chief executive of Maldon District Council which runs Millfields Caravan Park, revealed only three of the 27 tenants had met demands to pay their rent up front.
The remaining 24 vans will be removed from the site, he said.
Speaking at Burnham's Annual Town Meeting on Wednesday April 30, Mr Watson said: "We had to take a firm line with this and demanded upfront payment of the rent fees.
"Unfortunately only three have paid, and although a fourth has said they are willing to pay they will not be returning their caravan to the site until next year as they are concerned about the disruption.
"The caravans and rubbish should be cleared away in the next two weeks."
Mr Watson said the future of the site is now being considered.
"We will continue to run the site for the remainder of the year for the remaining three residents but we will be looking at its future.
"There have been suggestions there is a developer waiting in the wings but this is not the case.
"There are a number of options to be considered and housing development is not one of them.
"We could choose to undertake further development and substantially upgrade the facility, or could enter into a partnership with a company which would run the caravan park.
"Another possibility is to return the site to open space for the use of the community."

Maybe turn the area into a “all weather” pitch so all the local rugby/football/crick
et teams can practice throughout the year, add a couple of floodlights and cap the usage time to say 9pm to keep any locals that may object happy. I can’t see a problem with a “sports” based arena myself as it’s out of the way and surrounded by trees, and there are other recreational facilities close by.
