BAKERS is celebrating the end of an era, as the club closes its doors for a £2million makeover.
The bar and nightclub, in Alexandra Street, Southend, will host one last party this weekend, before it shuts until mid-September when the major refurbishment is completed.
Although detailed plans of the refit are not being revealed, general manager Tom Gowans says the work will create an unrivalled nightclub atmosphere.
“We’re keeping the exact details under wraps, so it’ll be a big surprise when we open again,” says Tom.
“We are sure it’s going to take night time entertainment to the next level, and we want to provide the ultimate experience for contemporary clubbers.”
He did, however, reveal the capacity of the club will increase from 920 to 1,500, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system will be installed, and unique decor is being introduced.
The basement will remain largely unchanged, at the request of the club’s regular revellers.
To mark the closure, Bakers is holding a final party weekend, aptly named End of an Era.
Tonight’s Fundamental line-up includes indie, pop and dance anthems, while all three floors open tomorrow for floor fillers, classic tunes, garage, R&B, hip hop and urban.
“It’s a chance to give our regular customers and other clubbers in Southend a huge party,” Tom says.
“After this work has finished, we’ll be a completely different club.”
Fundamental opens at 9pm on Friday, with £5 entry all night. Doors for Saturday open at 9pm, with varying prices depending on the time of entry.
