The Green Finance Summit kicks off in London tomorrow, showcasing the latest innovations in eco-friendly banking and planet-protecting financial policies.

Keynote speakers at the event – which is only in its second year – will be John Glen MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, and Nick Bridge, the Foreign Secretary’s Climate Envoy.

This year the summit takes place against the backdrop of renewed optimism in the financial services sector as a whole, which stabilised in the second quarter of 2018.

This follows sharp falls over the previous two quarters, according to the latest CBI and PwC Financial Services Survey.

In fact, employment across the financial services sector increased for a second consecutive quarter at the fastest pace for a year – and this is expected to rise even further.

At the same time, figures from the Department for International Trade (DIT) show a strong global interest in the UK’s financial services driving services exports growth.

Exports of goods and services from the UK hit a record high of £620.2 billion in the year leading up to March 2018.

According to the CBI and PwC survey, investment intentions in financial services for 2018 have also improved, with marketing budgets increasing and investment in IT jobs estimated to rise at the fastest pace in more than three years.

And in an industry fixated on figures, the sheer numbers of job roles is mind-boggling – everything from data analysts and administrators to project managers and paraplanners are much sought after.

There are also positions in investment, regulations, risk assessment and as finance directors of multinational operations.

Here are just a few of the top jobs available right now.

Business Analyst

As an analyst not only do you get experience working with different teams and across businesses but the role usually comes with opportunities to quickly build your career.

Often you’ll be working on regulatory change projects or complex project portfolios, particularly within consumer finance.

As a lead analyst you’ll manage an entire team and so excellent communication skills are a must to develop strong stakeholder relationships.

Chartered Accountant

If you check out the vacancies on s1jobs you’ll find there’s no single route to becoming a chartered accountant.

And once qualified, you could find yourself choosing to work from a surprisingly vast range of clients and companies – from small firms providing a service to local businesses or one of the big, international providers of accountancy services.

Financial Planner

Also going by the name adviser or consultant, this is all about selling one of the most valuable financial commodities: good advice.

Financial planners help clients analyse figures, choose investments, pick insurance packages and increase their understanding of financial products.

As well as advising on the right products, business development can also be part of the job, so as well as a sharp mind and a knowledge of the market, it pays to be imaginative.

Paraplanner

Also known as senior administrator, the paraplanner operates in a structured corporate environment, often dealing with compliance issues yet always focused on the mission.

This might be the provision of technical support and report writing or working on the frontline with financial advisers and high-level clients.

Organisational skills must be balanced by excellent communication skills.
