Women intending to be working mothers at some point may find that this wish is hindering their career progression, as research has revealed that almost half of all bosses will not promote them in case they leave to have kids.
Conducted by TheLadders.co.uk - an executive job search firm that posts positions above the £50,000 threshold - the study found that this is true of 42.7 per cent of senior management personnel questioned, Fresh Business Thinking reports.
And it is a fear that is prevalent despite the fact that they find female employees perform better during interviews, have greater motivation, communication and presentation skills and are more able to multitask.
The survey also showed that 59 per cent consider women to be more successful at interview, beating men in 11 out of 18 criteria.
Managing director of the website Derek Pilcher noted that the "unspoken reasons" for not giving them the top jobs is concerning, "in particular the fear of losing female management after they have had children".
