Maldon: Bronze of Fat man's coat

A bronze relief showing the famous wager on how many people can fit in the waistcoat of Edward Bright, the Fat Man of Maldon, has been installed at the King's Head Centre, off Maldon High Street.

The work has been created by artist Catharni Stern (pictured above) and commissioned by businessman James Mann.

The wager was on whether 500 men could be buttoned into the waistcoat, but this was topped by the man who got seven men from the Dengie Hundred, so making 700 men, explained Catharni.

Tim Groves, chairman of Maldon Culture Company, hoped the new work would be the start of more public sculpture in the town.
